Tunalicious Porec: what you need to know

If you consider yourself a bit of a foodie, there’s a festival you need to know about. Tunalicious Porec is a street food festival that runs from 31 August to 7 September in one of Istria’s most popular seaside resorts. From gourmet dinners to an international tuna fishing competition, there’s lots going on during this festival dedicated to the ‘Queen of the Adriatic’. Here’s what to expect…

Food, glorious food

Tuna fans will be in heaven during this festival, when the local restaurants will be running special tuna-themed menus for the whole week. On 6 September, the Spinnaker Gourmet Stage dinners at Porec’s Spinnaker restaurant are the place to be: you’ll find top chefs and celebrated winemakers coming together to serve up tuna in mouthwatering style. As if that wasn’t enough, from 5 to 7 September the Street Food Festival gives you even more opportunities to sample delicious fresh tuna and other seafood dishes, all washed down with wonderful local wines.

International tuna fishing competition

Tunalicious Porec isn’t just about eating tuna; it’s also about catching it. Known as ‘TunIstra’, the Offshore World Challenge is a big game fishing competition that runs from 4 to 7 September. Over the last four years, it’s become Croatia’s largest big game fishing competition and features over 60 boats all vying for a place in the world championship in Costa Rica. For visitors who aren’t fishing, the sight of the tuna being weighed on the waterfront at the end of each day is an impressive one – it’s not often that you get to see such large fish up close.

Of course, there’s a lot more to do and see in Porec than all things tuna. If you’re heading on holiday to this popular resort, check out our top things to do in Porec. When you fancy some Italian cuisine for a break from all that tuna, you could even hop on a ferry from Porec and visit!
